Why Excavation Is Harder in Savannah’s Coastal Plain

Excavation in Savannah is fundamentally different from digging in Georgia’s
red-clay Piedmont. Savannah sits on the Atlantic Coastal Plain, where soils
are dominated by loose silts, sands, and soft clays that hold water and shift
under load. Because so much of the coastal Georgia and SC Lowcountry landscape
sits only a few feet above sea level, the water table is shallow, tidally
influenced, and quick to rise after the region’s heavy rainfall. Dig much past
a few feet and you are often working at or below the water line. At Solid

so trenches stay open, stable, and dry long enough to complete the work
safely. Understanding the ground before the first bucket of soil is moved is
what separates a clean dig from a collapsed, water-filled hole.

Dewatering and Groundwater Control for Coastal Georgia Digs

A high water table is the single biggest excavation challenge in the Savannah
area. Groundwater that seeps into an open trench softens the base, floats
footings, and undermines nearby structures. The right dewatering method
depends on soil type and how deep the dig goes:

• Wellpoint systems — a series of small suction wells tied to
  a vacuum pump, ideal for the shallow, sandy soils common across Savannah’s
  coastal plain.
• Deep-well pumps — submersible pumps set below grade to

Every dig starts with a Georgia 811 utility locate. State law requires calling
811 at least 48 hours before mechanized digging so gas, water, power, and
communication lines are marked. This step is non-negotiable on every project
